On 9th July 2025, 10 central trade unions and their affiliated organizations have called for a nationwide strike. The unions claim that nearly 25 crore workers across India are participating in the protest.

The strike is being held to oppose the privatisation of public sector units and the implementation of the four new labour codes introduced by the central government. According to the unions, these policies are anti-worker, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate, and threaten the rights and job security of employees.

As per the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), India has around 56 crore workers in both the public and private sectors. Out of these, 50 crore are employed in the informal sector, while only 6 crore workers are in the formal sector. This indicates that the vast majority of the workforce lacks job security, social protection, and legal safeguards — key issues at the heart of this strike.

The trade unions are demanding that the government roll back its decisions and focus on protecting workers’ rights, improving job conditions, and halting the sale of public assets.
