The State Bank of India (SBI), the largest bank in the country, is planning to hire around 10,000 new employees this year. Workforce Strengthening
SBI Chairman C. S. Setty shared in an interview with PTI, “We are enhancing our workforce, focusing on both technology and general banking roles. Recently, we announced the recruitment of about 1,500 technology professionals, targeting both entry-level and higher-level positions.”
“Our technology hiring is concentrated on specialized positions such as data scientists, data architects, and network operators. We are looking for talent across various technology roles. Overall, we plan to add approximately 8,000 to 10,000 employees this year, covering both specialized and general roles,” he added. Capacity Building Efforts
Regarding employee development, Setty noted that SBI continuously invests in reskilling and upskilling its existing workforce to adapt to the changing needs of customers. “Customer expectations are evolving, technology is advancing, and digitalization is widely adopted. Therefore, we consistently upgrade our employees’ skills at all levels,” he stated.

Additionally, SBI provides specialized training in niche areas to better meet customer demands and enhance the overall banking experience.
Branch Expansion Plans
On the subject of network growth, Setty mentioned that SBI plans to open 600 new branches nationwide this financial year. As of March 2024, the bank operated 22,542 branches across the country. “Our branch expansion plans are robust, primarily targeting emerging areas. Many residential neighborhoods are currently underserved by our services. We aim to establish around 600 branches this year,” he explained.
Customer Reach and Services
In addition to its extensive branch network, SBI serves its customers through 65,000 ATMs and 85,000 business correspondents. “We serve approximately 500 million customers and take pride in being the bank for every Indian family,” Setty remarked.

Setty also expressed his ambition to transform SBI into the best and most valued bank, not just from a shareholder perspective but for all stakeholders involved with the bank. “Whether it’s our customers, shareholders, or the broader community, we want everyone to recognize SBI as the best bank to engage with,” he concluded.
