A Rich Legacy

The roots of this branch trace back to the Bank of Bombay, which set up its main office on this site in 1863. The foundation stone for the Bank of Bombay’s office was laid with great pomp by Sir Bartle Frere, then Governor of Bombay Presidency, in a military ceremony. The building was among the first to be constructed around the Elphinstone Circle, now known as Horniman Circle, named after Benjamin Horniman, a pro-freedom editor of The Bombay Chronicle.

On July 1, 1955, the Imperial Bank of India was nationalized and transformed into the State Bank of India through an act of Parliament. Later, in 1972, the local head office of the Imperial Bank of India became the Mumbai Main Branch of SBI.
