Rs.24 Lakh Robbery in HDFC Bank in Amritsar

Amritsar: In a shocking incident, five armed robbers looted Rs 24 lakh from an HDFC bank in Majhwind village near Kathunangal in broad daylight. The robbery took place around 3 pm, leaving the local community shaken.

How the Robbery Happened

The robbers arrived on two motorcycles, with their faces covered. Out of the five, three were carrying pistols. As soon as they reached the bank, they overpowered the unarmed security guard and forced him, along with the cashier, staff, and customers, to stay quiet at gunpoint. The scene inside the bank quickly became tense as the robbers took control.

Hostages and Demands

Once inside, the robbers held the bank’s staff and guard hostage. They approached the cashier, threatening him and demanding all the cash available in the bank. The entire incident happened in a matter of minutes, with the robbers quickly grabbing Rs 24 lakh.

As they left, the robbers even pulled down the shutters of the bank, preventing anyone from following them immediately. Their swift and organized manner of carrying out the crime left little time for the staff to react.

What the Robbers Took

In addition to the cash, the robbers also took three mobile phones, laptops, and the bank’s digital video recorder (DVR), which contained crucial CCTV footage. However, it seems the robbers might have panicked or thought twice about keeping the electronics, as the mobile phones and laptops were later found abandoned near the crime scene.

Police Investigation

The bank authorities reported the robbery to the police at 3:30 pm, just half an hour after the crime. Senior police officials, including Amritsar Rural SSP Charanjit Singh and SP (D) Harinder Singh Gill, immediately arrived at the scene to begin their investigation.

The police are now analyzing nearby CCTV footage to identify any clues about the robbers. Unfortunately, due to the delayed alert from the bank, the police couldn’t respond in time to catch the robbers in the act.

SSP Charanjit Singh expressed that if the bank staff had informed the authorities sooner, the robbers might have been caught. However, he assured the public that the police are actively working on the case and are confident they will apprehend the culprits soon.

Community in Shock

This bold robbery has left residents of Majhwind village and nearby areas in shock. Broad daylight robberies of this scale are rare, and the way it was executed has raised concerns about the safety of financial institutions in smaller towns.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of having better security measures in place at banks, especially in rural areas. While the police investigation is ongoing, the community is hoping for quick justice and a return to peace.
