A major fraud has been discovered at Axis bank branch on Khed Road in Balotra district, Rajasthan, on November 19. A routine cash verification revealed a shortage of more than Rs 22 lakh. The branch later found that cashier Hridaya Yadav had allegedly replaced real currency notes with children’s toy notes (Popularly called Churan Notes).
Balotra is a city situated in the Balotra district within the state of Rajasthan, India. Previously, it was located in the Barmer district of the Indian state of Rajasthan.
Balotra Deputy Superintendent of Police (DYSP) Anil Purohit confirmed that Yadav was arrested on Sunday and has been remanded to police custody for five days. According to the complaint filed by branch head Mayank Jugtawat, Yadav had joined the bank in April 2024. The fraud came to light when staff noticed a shortage of Rs 71,000 during the vault count on November 19.
Branch operations head Govind Thada checked all voucher entries for the day and confirmed that they were correct. This led the management to order a detailed inspection of all cash bundles in the vault. During the rechecking, several bundles of ₹500 notes were found to be tampered with. Each bundle contained children’s toy currency notes of ₹100 mixed among 554 genuine notes. In each bundle, five to seven original notes had been replaced with fake toy notes. After counting all the bundles, the total shortage was found to be over Rs 22 lakh.
Under continuous questioning, Yadav confessed that he had diverted the money to an acquaintance working at a refinery, claiming the money would be returned the next morning. Further investigation showed that Yadav had actually given a large amount of money to a man named Aditya, who had promised to arrange a government job for him.
Police also examined Yadav’s bank statements, emails, and his Central Bank account, which revealed suspicious transactions. Investigating officer Babulal from Balotra police station found that Yadav had ordered the children’s toy notes from Amazon. He kept the tampered currency bundles separately in the safe room so that regular checks would not detect them.
A case has been registered, and further investigation is in progress.
