Recently, a news came into light that India Post is discontinuing Registered Post Services. The Indian Postal Department announced that it will discontinue the Registered Post service from 1st September 2025.

This news went viral on social media and users started criticizing India Post for discontinuing Registered Post services. Registered Post is used for sending important documents like job offer letters, legal notices, and government-related paperwork. It’s commonly used by courts, banks, and universities because it provides proof of delivery that’s accepted in court.

Registered Post is person-specific – this means that it is delivered only to the specific person whereas Speed Post is address-specific – this means that it is delivered to the address.

Registered PostDelivered only to the addressee (the person whose name is written on the envelope or parcel)
Speed PostDelivered to any person available at the given address, not necessarily the specific person named.

After users criticized India Post, now India Post has issued clarification and said that it will not discontinue Registered Post. Registered Post will continue but it will be merged with Speed Post. Registered Post is slow in comparison to Speed Post and that’s why India Post wants to merge it with Speed Post so that registered post letters can be delivered faster.

The usage of Registered Post has declined significantly. According to official data, the number of registered items dropped by 25%, from 244.4 million in 2011-12 to 184.6 million in 2019-20. Thus, India Post is taking steps to merge it with Speed Post.

India Post has said that the registered post facilitity will be available in Speed Post. There will be two options in Speed Post – 1) Speed Post Letter and Speed Post Parcel and 2) Speed Post with registration.

Speed Post Letter and Speed Post Parcel will continue to be address-specific, meaning they will be delivered to whoever is present at the address. However, if someone sends a letter via Speed Post with registration, then it will be delivered only to the addressee—just like Registered Post.

This way, customers will get the best of both services — the speed of Speed Post and the security of Registered Post.

People using Speed Post with registration will now enjoy premium features, including:

  • End-to-end online tracking of the item
  • Real-time delivery updates through the system
  • Secure delivery using OTP (One-Time Password)
  • Cash on Delivery (COD) services for e-commerce needs
  • Credit facility for regular users
  • Volume-based discounts for bulk mailers
  • National Account Facility for corporate customers

  1. Withdraw decision is appreciable
Speed post is deliver to any person after roaming many Post offices, the name Speed Post is not appropriate.
I have also an bitter experience in this reference that once I sent letter by Speed Post which delivered after five days while on the same centre I sent letter by Regd post, it was delivered to the addressee on right third day.

    Do you believe?
What were the reasons behind late delivery of speed post, I don’t know but Regd post is still popular than speed post.

  2. I think merger of registered post with speed post is with the intention to increase registration charges to the high level of speed post charges .
