Congress Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi made a bold promise ahead of the upcoming elections, stating that if his party is elected, women would hold half of all government jobs. In a social media post, he emphasized the importance of women’s equal participation in running the country, stating that their potential can only be fully utilized when they have an equal voice in the government. Gandhi believes that this move is crucial for empowering every woman in the country.
The Lok Sabha election is scheduled to take place in seven phases from April 19 to June 1. The Congress party, leading the opposition as part of The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), aims to defeat the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Earlier this month, Gandhi faced criticism for his “Shakti” remark, which led to accusations of him being “anti-Hindu” and “anti-woman.”
Speaking on the matter, Gandhi stressed that having women occupy 50% of government positions would not only empower every woman in the country but also shape the destiny of India itself. He expressed his support for immediate action to ensure women’s reservations in the Parliament and assemblies. Gandhi questioned why women’s representation in the system remains disproportionately low, despite making up 50% of India’s population and having higher education enrollment.
Although an official manifesto is still pending, the Congress has outlined five key pledges for women as part of their election campaign. These include providing financial aid to impoverished families, doubling the Centre’s contribution to ASHA, Anganwadi, and mid-day meal workers’ pay, offering legal support in every panchayat, and increasing the number of hostels for working women. Echoing these commitments, Gandhi stated that by providing income security, future stability, and self-respect for women, they will transform into a powerful force within society.
