A 31-year-old man named Dalim Basu was arrested in the Survey Park area of Kolkata for trying to rob a bank using a toy gun, according to the police. The incident happened on Friday around 3 PM. Dalim Basu works for the Department of Post (India Post).

A man named Dalim Bose, also known as Tatai, was arrested in Kolkata’s Survey Park area after he tried to rob a State Bank of India (SBI) branch located at 49, Santoshpur Avenue. The incident happened at around 2:45 PM.

According to sources, Dalim entered the bank carrying a toy gun, which was actually a gas lighter shaped like a gun, and a folding knife. As soon as he entered, he went up to the bank manager and threatened him, saying he would face serious consequences if he didn’t hand over the money immediately.

However, the bank staff quickly realised that the gun was fake and looked more like a lighter. Acting fast, they overpowered Dalim and even manhandled him before he could carry out the robbery.

The bank manager immediately called the police, who arrived shortly and arrested Dalim Bose on the spot. During a search, the police also found a folding knife in his possession.

Further investigation revealed that Dalim lives near the bank and works as a sorting assistant at Yogayog Bhavan under India Post. He is under serious financial pressure, with a loan of around ₹35 lakh. His wife is also pregnant, and he reportedly told the police that he was struggling to repay the loan, which is why he tried to rob the bank.

However, police also suspect that medical expenses related to his wife’s treatment may have added to his financial burden, which could be another reason behind his desperate act.
