In Kanpur, bank employees of Punjab National Bank (PNB) held a protest outside the divisional office on Birhana Road. The demonstration was organized by the Punjab National Bank Progressive Employees Association. The employees came together to raise their voices against the bank management, accusing them of issuing new rules and orders without any discussion or consent. They described these decisions as unfair and one-sided.

Why Are the Employees Protesting?

State Chairman Sanjay Trivedi explained that employees are being forced to follow new work responsibilities that were not part of their original duties. Some of the main concerns include:

  • The compulsory use of a mobile app for daily attendance.
  • Customer evaluation using QR codes, which adds pressure on staff.
  • Employees being involved in deposit and retail loan schemes by the bank’s Deposit and Marketing Department.
  • Imposing sales targets on staff without proper training or agreements.

Trivedi said these actions go against labour laws and employee rights. He also pointed out that while bank management makes promises during meetings with the Regional Labour Commissioner in Lucknow, they continue to pressure employees on the ground.

Issues With Customer Service and Staff Shortage

Assistant General Secretary Mohammad Fazil highlighted that many bank branches are dealing with staff shortages, which is directly affecting the quality of service given to customers. He also pointed out that RBI guidelines are not being followed. According to these guidelines:

  • There should be separate counters for senior citizens.
  • There must be dedicated counters or help desks to exchange damaged or torn currency notes.

Unfortunately, many bank branches are not following these rules, causing problems for customers.
