The CBI Court in Ahmedabad has convicted and sentenced five private individuals—Salauddin Shaikh, Kriti Kumar R. Saha, Kamlesh D. Rao, Mahendra C. Vakharia, and Bhupendra Manilal Vakharia—to three years of rigorous imprisonment. Each has also been fined ₹50,000 in a bank fraud case.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered the case against Salauddin Shaikh, Ramesh Bhaisabh, and others. They were accused of trying to defraud the Bank of India by encashing forged demand drafts (DDs) worth ₹45 lakh. During the investigation, it was found that a total of 19 forged DDs, each worth ₹9 lakh, were created. Out of these, 12 DDs were encashed, totaling ₹1.08 crore.
After completing the investigation, the CBI filed charges on 10 September 2004 against Salauddin Shaikh, Kriti Kumar R. Saha, Kamlesh D. Rao, Mahendra C. Vakharia, Bhupendra Manilal Vakharia, and Nasirullah Afzal Shaikh. Nasirullah Afzal Shaikh passed away during the trial, so the case against him was abated.
After the trial, the Hon’ble Court convicted and sentenced all five accused accordingly.
