In a rare and unusual decision, the Orissa High Court has allowed a woman accused of bank fraud to be released on bail—but with a unique condition. The woman, Manogyan Patnaik, was told that she must perform cleaning duties at the same bank where the fraud took place.
What Is the Case About?
Manogyan Patnaik was arrested in a case of financial fraud involving ICICI Bank on Cuttack Link Road. According to the investigation, she had mortgaged the same property multiple times to take loans worth Rs 1.05 crore from three different accounts at the bank.
Later, it was found that the same property had already been used as collateral for a loan from the Indian Bank branch in Ashok Nagar, Bhubaneswar, which had not been repaid. The Crime Branch arrested Patnaik on February 5, 2025, after detailed inquiries confirmed her involvement in the multi-loan scam.
When the court considered her bail application, the judge decided to release her on strict conditions. One of the most notable conditions was that she must clean the bank premises every day between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM for the next two months. If she fails to follow this rule, her bail will be canceled immediately.
What Does the Court Order Say?
The case is being heard under the OPID (Odisha Protection of Interests of Depositors) Act, and the accused faces serious charges under Sections 420, 467, 468, 471, and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). These include cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy.
The order by Justice Dr. S.K. Panigrahi stated that although the court is not commenting on the merits of the case at this stage, the bail is granted with strict terms to ensure accountability and social responsibility.
