The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has rolled out an important update to the GST registration process. From May 1, 2025, a new biometric authentication feature has been introduced. This feature will start with the state of Sikkim. This is part of a broader effort to improve verification accuracy and reduce fraud in the GST registration system. This has been done to verify individuals who have been identified as high risk. Now, individuals will have to visit the GST Suvidha Kendra and verify their identity.
What’s New?
The update is based on an amendment to Rule 8 of the CGST Rules, 2017, which now allows the GST portal to identify applicants using data analysis and risk profiling. Based on this, some applicants will be required to undergo biometric-based Aadhaar authentication and in-person document verification.
How the New Process Works
After a taxpayer submits their GST registration application (Form GST REG-01), they will receive an email. This email will contain one of two possible links, depending on the applicant’s risk profile:
- OTP-Based Aadhaar Authentication
- If you receive this link, you can complete your application online as usual using an OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Appointment Booking for Biometric Authentication
- If you receive this link, you must book an appointment to visit a nearby GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK). At the GSK, your biometric Aadhaar authentication and physical document verification will be carried out.
Available in Sikkim (for now)
This new system has been launched in Sikkim as of May 1, 2025. Applicants in the state will now see the option to book an appointment slot online if biometric authentication is required.
Documents to Carry to GSK
When visiting a GSK, applicants must carry:
- A printout or digital copy of the appointment confirmation email
- Details of jurisdiction as mentioned in the earlier email
- Original Aadhaar Card and PAN Card
- Original copies of the documents that were uploaded during the application
Important Notes
- All individuals mentioned in the application (Form REG-01) must appear for biometric and document verification if required.
- Applicants must complete this process within the time limit specified in their notification email.
- Only after successful verification, the Application Reference Number (ARN) will be generated.
- GSK will follow the guidelines provided by state government.
Why This Matters
This initiative aims to add a layer of security to the GST registration process, especially for applicants flagged as potentially high-risk. It will help ensure that the GST system remains robust and trustworthy.
