In a shocking revelation from Madhya Pradesh, around 50,000 state government employees have reportedly not received their salaries for the past six months. This includes 40,000 regular employees and 10,000 contractual or temporary workers, whose paychecks have been held up due to suspected administrative lapses or fraudulent activities. The total unpaid salary amount has reached a staggering ₹230 crore, making it one of the most serious salary disruptions in recent times.
Although these employees have valid employee codes, their salaries have not been disbursed from the state treasury, sparking concerns over irregularities in the payroll system. In response, the Department of Treasury and Accounts has launched an official investigation to find out the reason of the delays.
The inquiry is being led by the Commissioner of Treasury and Accounts (CTA) in collaboration with Drawing and Disbursing Officers (DDOs). Each DDO has been asked to verify and certify that no fake or unauthenticated employees are on their payroll.
The investigation is focused on several key areas:
- Whether false employee codes were generated
- If genuine employees were mistakenly excluded
- Whether the delay was caused by system errors or administrative oversight
- If a larger fraud within the government payroll system is at play
What has raised even more concern is that the employees did not file any complaint despite not receiving salaries for half a year. The absence of formal complaints has led investigators to suspect that some of the employee codes may be fake, possibly created to siphon off government funds.
A senior officer noted, “If someone isn’t paid, they usually ask questions. The fact that nobody has complained suggests something is off.”
The state government has assured that genuine employees will be paid once the verification process is complete. If any irregularities or fake entries are found, disciplinary actions and systemic reforms will be implemented.
Officials have also emphasized the need for:
- Greater transparency in the payroll system
- Stronger verification mechanisms for employee data
- Long-term reforms to prevent such disruptions in the future
This ongoing crisis has highlighted major flaws in the payroll management of the Madhya Pradesh government. With thousands of employees affected and crores of rupees in limbo, the outcome of this investigation could set a precedent for how seriously payroll transparency and administrative accountability are treated going forward.
As the inquiry progresses, all eyes will be on whether the state can restore trust and ensure fair payments for its workforce.
