On January 7, the Maldives government took action against three deputy ministers who made inappropriate remarks on social media about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep Islands. The government stated that their remarks were insulting to India, and as a result, the deputy ministers have been suspended from their positions.
Even though the official statement did not mention the ministers by name, local media identified them as Mariyam Shiuna, Malsha Sharyf, and Mahzoom Majid. All government officials responsible for the comments are now suspended with immediate effect, according to Ibrahim Khaleel, the government spokesperson.
Why Maldives ministers abused Indian PM Narendra Modi?
Prime Minister Modi had recently visited Lakshadweep and shared pictures of his snorkeling experience on social media. This visit led to a social media debate comparing Lakshadweep to the Maldives in terms of serenity. In response, the three Maldivian ministers used inappropriate language targeting Modi.
Snorkeling is the practice of swimming face down on or through a body of water while breathing the ambient air through a shaped tube called a snorkel, usually with swimming goggles or a diving mask, and swimfins.
The Maldivian Foreign Ministry acknowledged the derogatory remarks on social media and clarified that these opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the Maldivian government. The government emphasized the importance of exercising freedom of expression in a democratic and responsible manner, without spreading hatred or negativity, to maintain positive relationships with international partners.
It’s noteworthy that the Maldives holds a significant position as one of India’s key maritime neighbors in the Indian Ocean Region. Bilateral ties between India and the Maldives, including defense and security cooperation, have been on an upward trajectory under the leadership of President Ibrahim Solih.
