A massive fire broke out in a multi-storey building in Guwahati early Wednesday, destroying property, important documents, and possibly a large amount of cash belonging to the State Bank of India (SBI).
The fire started around 2 am at Swagota Square in the ABC area near Rajiv Bhawan. Locals said the flames spread quickly and engulfed all six floors of the building within minutes.
Because of the intensity of the blaze and the thick black smoke, authorities deployed 25 fire engines — 22 from Assam Fire & Emergency Services and 3 from Narengi Refinery and the Digaru Air Force. Firefighters continued their operations until the afternoon, struggling to reach pockets of fire deep inside the building.
The structure houses retail stores and the SBI Northeast Regional Office. The bank’s second-floor premises appear to be among the worst hit. Staff members fear the loss of crucial loan documents, financial papers, and lockers.
A senior SBI employee, standing outside the damaged building, said the situation was heartbreaking.
“There are loan files, education documents and many important papers inside. It seems everything may be damaged. This is the main head office for the Northeast,” he said.
Fire officials said it is too early to confirm what caused the blaze. Some initial accounts suggest it may have started due to decorative lights installed ahead of the festive season, but no official confirmation has been given yet.
Authorities say they are currently focused on fully controlling the fire. An investigation will begin once the building becomes safe to enter.
