Tech giant Google is planning to produce its Pixel smartphones and drones in India, according to sources familiar with the matter. The company will manufacture the phones at an existing Foxconn facility located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. This move comes as India has become an attractive destination for global companies seeking to diversify their supply chains away from China due to geopolitical tensions with the West.

Commitment to the Indian Market

Last year, Google announced its intention to produce Pixel smartphones in India, starting with the Pixel 8. In a blog post, the company stated that India is a priority market for Pixel smartphones and that it is dedicated to bringing the best hardware and software capabilities to people across the country. The manufacturing of advanced versions of Pixel smartphones at the Tamil Nadu facility is expected to begin within this calendar year, as per sources.

Partnership with Foxconn

Google and Foxconn have reportedly signed a contract for the production of Pixel smartphones in Tamil Nadu. Foxconn, known for assembling Apple’s iPhones, already operates two facilities in the state. The decision to manufacture Pixel phones in Tamil Nadu was made after state officials held meetings with Google executives. Additionally, Google representatives are scheduled to meet with the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, in Chennai in the near future.

This move by Google indicates the company’s commitment to the Indian market and its recognition of India as an important hub for manufacturing. By producing Pixel smartphones and drones locally, Google aims to cater to the growing demand in India while also reducing dependence on external supply chains.
