Madhusudan Agrawal, the Honorary Consul of Uganda in Mumbai and a well-known philanthropist, has been awarded the prestigious ‘Consular of the Year’ title by the Honorary Consular Corps Diplomatique-India (HCCD). Agrawal, who is also the co-founder and Vice Chairman of Ajanta Pharma, currently serves as the General Secretary of HCCD Mumbai and as a Director of HCCD India.

The award acknowledges Agrawal’s exceptional contributions to strengthening the relationship between India and Uganda, his humanitarian work, and his dedication to diplomacy and social welfare. He was selected from a group of more than 200 honorary consuls representing different countries in India.

“I am truly honoured to receive this prestigious award from HCCD,” Agrawal said. “This recognition is not just for me—it’s for my family, my colleagues at Ajanta Pharma, and the team at Mamta and Madhusudan Agrawal Foundation, who have all been dedicated to improving society. I also extend my sincere thanks to the Government and people of Uganda for giving me the opportunity to serve them,” he added.

Agrawal expressed that the award carries great responsibility, reinforcing his commitment to continue serving the community and making a meaningful impact. “This award reminds me that there is still so much more to do. I will continue working on expanding healthcare initiatives, strengthening India-Uganda relations, and striving for a healthier and better world,” he said, highlighting India’s belief in “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (The World is One Family).

One of Agrawal’s most significant philanthropic achievements is his support for cancer awareness and treatment in both Uganda and India. He donated a Mammography Van, known as ‘Hope Express,’ to the Uganda Cancer Institute, which was officially handed over during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Uganda in 2018. This mobile cancer screening unit has helped with the early detection of breast and cervical cancer, benefiting over 300,000 women and saving over 1,500 lives.

Agrawal has also played a pivotal role in bringing more than 100 children from Uganda to India for life-saving heart surgeries, all at no cost. Additionally, he initiated an artificial limb program in Uganda to assist individuals affected by landmines and accidents. He plans to donate and fit 1,000 prosthetic limbs to help individuals regain mobility and independence.

In India, Agrawal’s Sanjeevani Mamta Hospital, part of the Mamta & Madhusudan Agrawal Foundation in Andheri, Mumbai, provides free cancer screening camps. These camps offer early detection and subsidized treatment for breast and cervical cancer patients, aiming to remove financial barriers to accessing essential healthcare.

Agrawal also praised Prime Minister Modi’s vision for affordable healthcare, particularly highlighting the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, which has provided free cancer treatment to over 6.8 million patients. The program has improved early detection in 36% of cancer cases, according to The Lancet, significantly enhancing survival rates.

“Under PM Modi’s leadership, India has become a global leader in healthcare, ensuring that quality treatment is available to everyone, regardless of their financial background. His vision for ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ inspires me to continue my mission of public welfare,” Agrawal stated.

Agrawal’s work in business, diplomacy, and philanthropy has earned him numerous prestigious awards, including the Golden Jubilee Medal from Yoweri Museveni, President of Uganda, the ABLF Business Innovator Award, and the Seva Bhushan Samman from the Governor of Uttarakhand. He was also recognized with the Icons of Aurangabad Award by Ratan Tata.

Through his continued efforts in healthcare, social service, and diplomacy, Agrawal remains committed to making a positive and lasting impact on society.
