Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of innocent lives in Pahalgam. In a show of compassion, LIC has announced a special process to speed up the settlement of death claims for those who have lost their loved ones in this unfortunate event.

LIC has announced a simplified process to file death claim. You can simply call LIC customer care at 022 68276827 and know all details. Alternatively you can visit any LIC Branch for details. Moreover, LIC has said that government records will be accepted as proof of death and customers need not provide any other proof.

Key Steps for Filing a Death Claim with LIC

If you are a nominee or family member of a policyholder who has passed away, it’s important to know that the process for filing a death claim is done offline. Before heading to the LIC branch where the policy was issued, ensure you have all the necessary documents ready to file the claim.

LIC, in a statement on their official social media, said, “LIC of India expresses deep grief over the tragic death of innocent citizens at Pahalgam and has introduced special concessions to settle death claims quickly. We stand with the grieving families during this difficult time,” said Shri Siddhartha Mohanty, CEO & MD, LIC of India.

Eligibility for Death Claim

The death claim will be processed if the policyholder’s premiums are up to date, or if the death occurs within the grace period allowed by the policy.

Steps to Start the Death Claim Process

To begin the death claim settlement, the following steps need to be taken:

  1. Notify LIC: The claimant must inform the LIC servicing branch in writing. This notification should include the policy number, date of death, and cause of death.
  2. Submit Claim Form A: This form requires basic details about both the deceased person and the claimant.
  3. Death Certificate: A certified extract from the local death register, or in the case of the Pahalgam tragedy, government records or a compensation payment from the central or state government, can be used as proof of death. This can replace the traditional death certificate.
  4. Policy Document: The original policy document needs to be submitted.
  5. Proof of Age: Documents such as Aadhaar cards or PAN cards must be provided as proof of age for both the deceased and the claimant.
  6. Legal Entitlement (if applicable): If the policy was not nominated or assigned, proof of legal entitlement to the deceased’s estate will be required.
  7. Banking Details: To ensure smooth payment, the claimant should submit banking details, including a filled-out NEFT form, a cancelled cheque, or a copy of their bank passbook.

Special Concessions for the Pahalgam Tragedy

LIC’s CEO, Shri Siddhartha Mohanty, also shared in a press release on April 24, 2025, that for claims arising due to the Pahalgam tragedy, “LIC will accept government records or any compensation proof from the central or state government as evidence of the policyholder’s death.”

Additional Documents for Early Death Claims

If the policyholder passes away within three years of the policy being taken, revived, or reinstated, additional documents will be required:

  1. Claim Form B: A medical certificate from the attending physician detailing the last illness.
  2. Claim Form B1: Required if the deceased was hospitalized.
  3. Claim Form B2: From the medical professional who treated the deceased prior to the last illness.
  4. Claim Form C: A certificate of identity and burial/cremation, signed by a person of repute.
  5. Claim Form E: If the deceased was employed, a certificate from the employer is needed.
  6. Police Reports: In cases of accidental or unnatural death, a certified copy of the FIR, post-mortem report, and police investigation report will be necessary.

Contact Information for Claimants
