Karwa Chauth is one of the most important festivals celebrated by married Hindu women across India, especially in North Indian states such as Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. On this day, women observe a day-long fast for the long life, prosperity, and well-being of their husbands. In 2025, Karwa Chauth falls on Friday, October 10.
The word “Karwa” means an earthen pot used to store water, and “Chauth” means the fourth day. The festival is celebrated on the fourth day of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Kartik according to the Hindu lunar calendar. Karwa Chauth is a symbol of love, devotion, and trust between a husband and wife. Married women observe a strict fast from sunrise to moonrise — they do not consume food or even water during the day.
Karwa Chauth is not just about fasting; it is a celebration of marital love, faith, and togetherness. Many families make it a festive occasion with new clothes, jewelry, mehndi (henna), and gifts.
In recent years, the festival has also become more inclusive, with some men choosing to fast alongside their wives as a gesture of mutual love and respect.
