Kochi: M Suhaib, an additional district judge in Kozhikode, has been suspended after being accused of misbehaving with a female court employee in his official chamber. The Kerala High Court’s district judiciary registrar issued the suspension order, pending further investigation into the matter.
The high court’s administrative committee, led by Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar, convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday to deliberate on the incident. The committee deemed the allegations serious, stating that such behavior undermines the credibility of the state’s judicial system.
Allegations Spark Protests
The accusations involve Suhaib allegedly outraging the modesty of a female staff member. On Saturday, court employees staged a protest in response to the incident. This prompted the principal district judge of Kozhikode to summon both Suhaib and the complainant for a discussion. During the meeting, Suhaib reportedly offered an oral apology to the employee in the presence of the principal district judge.
Immediate Action Taken
Following the protest, the high court took immediate steps by transferring Suhaib to the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Vadakara on the same day. Suhaib has now been directed to hand over his duties to V G Biju, the additional district judge of Vadakara.
High Court Investigates
The high court’s administrative committee requested a detailed report from the principal district judge in Kozhikode regarding the incident. The report included the female employee’s oral account of the alleged misconduct. However, the woman declined to file a formal complaint or provide a written statement, which could hinder legal proceedings against Suhaib.
Disciplinary Action Initiated
Despite the absence of a formal complaint, the administrative committee decided to proceed with disciplinary measures. Suhaib has been issued a show-cause notice, asking him to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.
The high court emphasized the gravity of the allegations, citing the potential damage to the judiciary’s reputation and integrity. Further action will depend on Suhaib’s response and the findings of the ongoing inquiry.
