A journalist who had raised doubts about the accuracy of the data shared by the State Bank of India (SBI) regarding electoral bonds has now admitted her mistake. Poonam Agarwal, through a series of tweets, initially claimed that she had only purchased electoral bonds in 2018. However, when the released data showed that she had bought a bond in 2020, she acknowledged that she may have forgotten about the bonds purchased that year due to the Covid pandemic.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Poonam Agarwal stated, “I have come across a video that I recorded at The Quint in which I am showing an Electoral Bond dated 20/10/2020. I don’t remember purchasing a bond in 2020 but only in 2018. A unique number will clear many doubts. Till then let’s not question SBI data.” She further added, “One can blame it on my poor memory. 2020 was the year of the COVID outbreak, many things were happening. Maybe that’s why I don’t remember it. My apologies for my poor memory.”

The electoral bonds scheme, introduced by the BJP government in 2018, allowed individuals and businesses to make anonymous donations to political parties. However, in January, the Supreme Court struck down the scheme and directed SBI to disclose all details of donations made in the last five years.

When SBI initially shared the data, concerns were raised as it did not include electoral bond numbers that could have linked the donations to political parties. In response to this, independent journalist Poonam Agarwal claimed that the bonds purchased in her name were shown with the wrong date. She asserted that the data was incorrect because she had bought two bonds worth ₹1,000 each in April 2018, while the Election Commission’s website showed the same purchase in her name in October 2020.

However, after her video showing the 2020 bonds went viral, she issued a clarification stating that the SBI data should not be questioned.

According to the data released by the Election Commission of India, the BJP received the highest amount of funds through these bonds (₹8,252 crore) since the scheme was implemented in 2018. Trinamool Congress ranked second (₹1,397 crore), followed by Congress in third place (₹1,334 crore).

    Freedom of speech के नाम पर ऐसी झूठी अफवाह फैलाने वालों को freedom of speech का लाभ नहीं मिलना चाहिए क्योंकि SBI दुनिया का एक मात्र बैंक है जिस की साख है
