In a major shift marking the end of an era, the Indian Postal Department has announced that it will discontinue the Registered Post service starting September 1, 2025. This decision brings to a close one of the oldest and most trusted services offered by India Post — a system that has been relied upon by millions of individuals and institutions for over five decades to send important documents with tracking and legal proof of delivery.

Why is Registered Post Being Discontinued by India Post?

The India Post is discontinuing the registered post service as the number of users of registered post have decreased and thus, India Post wants to merge the Registered Post with Speed Post.

India Post also plans to modernise and streamline its operations. Instead of maintaining multiple services, the department will merge Registered Post with Speed Post, which is faster and offers better tracking.

Registered Post has been used for sending important documents like job offer letters, legal notices, and government-related paperwork. It was known for being affordable, reliable, and legally valid.

However, over the years, the usage of Registered Post has declined significantly. According to official data, the number of registered items dropped by 25%, from 244.4 million in 2011-12 to 184.6 million in 2019-20. This drop is mainly due to the growth of digital communication and increased use of private courier services and e-commerce delivery networks.

From when will Registered Post service be discontinued?

The Registered post service will be discontinued by India Post from 1st September 2025. From September 1, all government departments, courts, universities, and other users are being advised to switch to Speed Post. Speed Post, which started in 1986, offers faster delivery, better tracking, and more efficiency.

What About the Cost?

One major concern is the cost difference between the two services. Let’s have a look at the cost of Registered Post and Speed Post:

  • The cost of Registered Post is ₹25.96 + ₹5 per 20 grams.
  • The cost of Speed Post is ₹41 for up to 50 grams.

This means Speed Post can be 20–25% more expensive, which could impact rural users, small businesses, and farmers who depend on affordable postal services.

Impact on Public

Many people, especially in rural areas and older generations, are feeling nostalgic. For them, Registered Post wasn’t just a service—it was a symbol of trust and dependability.

Registered Post also had legal importance. It was commonly used by courts, banks, and universities because it provided proof of delivery that was accepted in court. Its roots go back to the British colonial period, and it has played a key role in India’s communication system for generations.
