Important FAQs on Bank Strike
If you are a bank employee and are wondering whether you can participate in the strike, please go through the FAQs below:
I am on probation. Can I go on strike? Will it affect my confirmation?
Yes. There are no restrictions on participating in a strike during the probation period. It is the right and duty of an employee to observe a strike as per the call given by their Union or Association. Participation in a strike does not affect confirmation. If there is any misunderstanding or pressure, you should immediately contact your Union or Association representative.
I am retiring within a year. Can I go on strike? Will it affect my pension or gratuity?
Yes, you can go on strike. Terminal benefits such as pension, gratuity, and leave encashment are calculated based on notional salary, not on the salary actually drawn during the strike period. A salary deduction due to a strike does not affect terminal benefits. These benefits are affected only in cases of suspension, loss of pay (other than strike), or punishment such as reduction in pay scale.
I am retiring this month. Can I go on strike? Will it affect my leave encashment?
Yes. Even at the time of retirement, participation in a strike does not affect terminal benefits such as pension, gratuity, or leave encashment, as these are calculated on the basis of notional salary. Only disciplinary actions like suspension, loss of pay (other than strike), or penalties can impact these benefits.
I am Scale IV or above. Can I go on strike?
Yes. Officers of all scales have the right to participate in a strike. When a Union or Association is fighting for the welfare and benefits of officers, it is important for officers of all scales to support the collective action.
Wage settlements up to Bipartite Settlement (BPS) 10 apply to officers from Scale I to Scale VII. UFBU has always fought for wage settlements covering all officer scales. There is a misconception and unnecessary fear created by vested interests to stop Scale IV and above officers from participating in strikes in order to divide employees. All organisations under UFBU are united in their fight for wage settlements and rights of officers of every scale.
I am on leave during the strike period. Can I go on strike?
Once a strike call is announced, members should not plan leave during that period. If leave was already applied for and sanctioned before the strike call, the member should request the Salary Disbursing Officer (SDO) to treat the day as a strike day and deduct salary accordingly.
Some of my colleagues are not going on strike. Should I still participate?
Yes. Do not stop yourself from observing the strike just because some colleagues are not participating. Instead, educate and motivate them. Explain the importance of unity and the strength of collective bargaining. Take the help of friends and your Union or Association representatives to convince them. Remember, the strike is for everyone, and unity is our greatest strength.
