An officer of the Odisha Administrative Service was brutally assaulted at the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC). The video has gone viral on social media.

The name of officer is Ratnakar Sahoo, Additional Commissioner, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation. He had attended a weekly grievance session at the Corporation building and he was dragged and beaten by a group of persons, said to be supporters of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader who had unsuccessfully contested the Odisha Assembly election in 2024.

The officer was injured. He later filed a complaint at the local police station.

“The officer was dragged from his office and brutally kicked and assaulted in front of a BJP corporator, allegedly linked to a defeated BJP MLA candidate,” former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said on social media platform X, adding, “What is more appalling is that this happened in broad daylight, in the heart of the capital city of Bhubaneswar, to a senior officer, while he was in his office hearing the grievances of people,” Mr. Patnaik said.

The Odisha Administrative Service Association on Monday has said that its members will go on a “mass leave” from Tuesday to protest against the alleged assault of a senior OAS officer. The decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the association chaired by its president Jyoti Ranjan Mishra here.

In a letter to district associations, the apex body said: “This is to formally inform you that the Odisha Administrative Service Association has unanimously resolved to proceed on a mass leave with effect from 1st July, 2025 in protest against the appalling and deplorable attack on the Additional Commissioner BMC, which occurred in broad daylight within official premises.”

Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi met with the members of the OAS Association for almost an hour, along with senior officials and assured them that the culprits and perpetrators behind the scenes will be strictly punished. Following the incident, the Odisha BJP has suspended five of its party members over their alleged involvement in the violence at the BMC office.

  1. This kind of brutality needs to be nipped in the buds. What the hell security personnel was doing at that moment? The culprits and the concerned leader should forthwith be arrested and dealt with an exemplary punishment.

  2. Power of BJP to cultivate the Hinduism culture. People of India must re-think the environment created by BJP all over the country has shamelessly spoiled and we are still clapping over it. The day will come whem we will clap without palm
