I leave home at 9 AM and come back at 8 PM: I want to Quit my PSU Bank Job
A 25-year-old woman officer working in a Public Sector Bank (PSU) has posted a detailed account on Reddit describing what she calls an extremely toxic and stressful work environment. Her post has gone viral, sparking discussions about workload, staff shortage and employee wellbeing in Indian banks.
According to her post, she joined the bank earlier this year with high hopes, but the reality turned out to be “far worse” than expected. She wrote that the branch she works in suffers from severe staff shortage and an unhealthy work culture marked by blame-shifting, lack of appreciation and constant pressure from seniors. She said her daily routine starts at 9 AM when she leaves for work, and she often returns home only after 8 PM. On many days, the working hours extend even further.

The officer, who is posted far from her home state, mentioned that she has not been able to visit her family even once in six months because leave is practically unavailable. She said her mental health has deteriorated significantly, and she has not felt genuinely happy “even for a single day.”
She added that even senior staff admit that the situation is difficult. Many of them reportedly told her: “If you want a better life, leave before it’s too late. We are stuck now.”
The young officer is now considering resigning and preparing for other government exams. Since she is unmarried and has no major responsibilities, she believes this may be the right time to make a change. However, she is worried about becoming unemployed and also about the ₹2.5 lakh bond amount she would have to pay if she quits early.
In her Reddit post, she said she feels mentally disturbed and is unsure whether resigning is a wise decision or whether she should continue trying to adjust. She asked for genuine advice from people who have faced similar situations, and also requested referrals or opportunities.
The post has triggered conversations online about the growing stress levels among banking employees, especially in public sector banks where workload and staff shortages have been long-standing issues.
A few months ago, a 29-year-old girl had left her job at Punjab National Bank, citing a toxic work culture. Vani said – “I had slowly started hating the person I was becoming,” she said, adding, “I used to be such a happy-go-lucky person, but in the past three years, I have become so grumpy and easily annoyed.” “So it was time to choose mental peace over financial stability.”
