About GST in India
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a comprehensive indirect tax implemented in India on July 1, 2017. GST replaced multiple taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty to create a single unified tax system.

🛒 5% GST (Reduced Rate)
This rate applies to:
- Condensed milk, butter, ghee, cheese, and dairy spreads
- Namkeen, biscuits, pasta, cereals, jams, sauces, pickles, and soups
- Dry fruits and nuts (e.g., almonds, cashews, raisins)
- Hair oil, shampoo, soap, and toothpaste
- Utensils, bicycles, and kitchenware
- Apparel priced up to ₹2,500 per piece
- Man-made fibres and yarns
- Carpets and other floor coverings
⚙️ 18% GST (Standard Rate)
This standard rate applies to most goods and services, including:
- Automobiles (excluding those in the 40% slab)
- Electronic appliances
- Furniture and home decor
- Consumer durables
- AC restaurants and fine-dining services
- Hotel room tariffs above ₹7,500 per day
💎 40% GST (Luxury & Sin Goods)
This higher rate is levied on:
- Luxury cars and SUVs
- Tobacco products
- Aerated beverages
- Betting, gambling, and online gaming
- Carbonated fruit drinks
