Google Removes 17 Apps with Over 1 Crore Downloads for Spying on Users – Delete Them Now!
In a recent development, Google removed 18 malicious “SpyLoan” apps from the Google Play Store. These apps, downloaded millions of times, functioned as spyware, stealing vast amounts of user data. This information was then used to blackmail borrowers into paying back loans with exorbitant interest rates.
ESET researchers, who initially identified the apps, shared their findings with Google. 17 apps were promptly removed, while the remaining one was updated with different functionality and permissions, effectively hiding its malicious intent. However, Android users are advised to manually remove even this app from their devices.
The affected apps targeted users in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, highlighting the global reach of these scams. While Google’s action is a positive step, it underscores the need for vigilance and caution when downloading financial apps.
