A new report by Pearson, a global learning company, reveals that generative AI has the potential to automate 46% of time spent on accounting tasks in India by 2032. This significant shift is expected to have a profound impact on the accounting profession, with many routine and repetitive tasks being replaced by AI-powered tools.

The report highlights the stark difference between the impact of generative AI on white-collar and blue-collar jobs. While 30% or more of the time spent on tasks involved in some white-collar roles could be automated by generative AI, less than 1% of blue-collar workers’ tasks are susceptible to AI automation.

This disparity is particularly evident in India, where the report underscores a 29% difference in the task-level impact between the most affected white-collar and blue-collar jobs. Accounting and bookkeeping roles are expected to bear the brunt of this automation, with 46% of accounting tasks being automated by 2032. Word processors and related operators are also likely to see a significant impact, with 40% of their tasks being automated.

The report’s findings emphasize the need for both workers and employers to adapt to the changing landscape brought about by generative AI. Employees should proactively seek upskilling and reskilling opportunities to prepare for the potential displacement of routine tasks. Employers, on the other hand, should explore ways to leverage generative AI to enhance productivity and efficiency while also supporting their workforce in adapting to the new demands of the digital era.
