Former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das Appointed Principal Secretary to PM Modi

Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to a government notification issued today.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet stated that Mr. Das’ tenure will be co-terminus with the Prime Minister’s term or will continue until further orders.

In another key development, the tenure of NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam has been extended by one year, starting February 24, 2025. A retired IAS officer from the 1987 batch, Mr. Subrahmanyam was initially appointed as NITI Aayog CEO for a two-year term in February 2023.

Shaktikanta Das: A Seasoned Bureaucrat and Former RBI Chief

Mr. Das, who served as RBI Governor from December 2018 to December 2024, has extensive experience spanning four decades in governance. He has held key positions in both central and state governments, particularly in areas such as finance, taxation, industries, and infrastructure.

During his tenure as RBI Governor, he played a crucial role in stabilizing the Indian economy amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his leadership, the central bank introduced several monetary, liquidity, and regulatory measures to ensure financial stability and economic resilience.

His proactive approach during the pandemic included a mix of conventional and innovative policy interventions, aimed at supporting growth, maintaining liquidity, and mitigating economic disruptions.

With his appointment as Principal Secretary to PM Modi, Mr. Das is set to play a pivotal role in shaping key policy decisions at the highest level of governance.
