Ghaziabad, September 11, 2025 – The Special Judicial Magistrate of the CBI Court in Ghaziabad has sentenced five people to three years of rigorous imprisonment along with a total fine of ₹2.1 lakh in a case of forgery and cheating. Those convicted are Tarun Uppal, Sanjeev Kumar, Vipin Kumar, Suresh Chandra Saini, and Gurmeet Singh Deval.

Case Background

The CBI registered the case on April 25, 2015, based on allegations of forgery and cheating related to the State Bank of India’s (SBI) recruitment exam for clerical cadre assistants. The SBI Central Recruitment and Promotion Department, Corporate Centre, Mumbai, had conducted the online written examination in July–August 2014.

Accused Gurmeet Singh Deval, Vipin Kumar, and Suresh Chandra Saini had applied for the posts and were scheduled to appear for the test at MIET, Meerut Campus-I, NH-58, Bagpat Crossing Bypass Road, Meerut.

  • Gurmeet Singh Deval was to appear on 26 July 2014,
  • Vipin Kumar on 27 July 2014, and
  • Suresh Chandra Saini on 23 August 2014.

Modus Operandi of Scam

The investigation revealed that Tarun Uppal impersonated all three candidates—appearing for the exam on their behalf. He also signed and placed thumb impressions on their admit cards and attendance sheets. It was further found that Sanjeev Kumar collected ₹6.5 lakh in total as undue advantage from the candidates:

  • ₹2.5 lakh from Gurmeet Singh Deval,
  • ₹2.5 lakh from Vipin Kumar, and
  • ₹1.5 lakh from Suresh Chandra Saini.

This money was allegedly collected on behalf of Tarun Uppal. After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet on March 30, 2016, against all the accused. Following the trial, the CBI Court convicted them on September 11, 2025 and sentenced each accused to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a total fine of ₹2.1 lakh.
