RTI Question: What is the update on Five Day Banking and by when can it be implemented?

RTI Reply: No specific information such as a document with specific letter no./ date of I.R. Section, DFS have been sought by you. Under RTI Act, CPIO is required to provide information as exists in the record and does not suppose to create/ collect/ interpret information, or to give non-existing opinion/ advice on the queries raised by the applicants. Queries/ clarifications are not covered under Section 2(f) of the Right to Information Act, 2005. However, information as identified/ available, proposal of Indian Banks Association to declare all Saturdays as banking holidays was received in I.R. Section on 30.11.2023.

Through this reply, it’s clear that the proposal of 5 day banking is lying with the Government of India but the government is not willing to tell the dates of implementation. As per bank unions, the 12th BPS will only be signed when the government declares 5 days banking.

  1. I think this will improve productivity of employees which will help banks to gain substantially. All other government undertaking are working on 5 days a week without hindering their daily work at all. As mostly urgent work like clearing ,foreign exchange activities are well taken care of by computer systems. And banking systems are robust to take any challenges as compared to historical banking. Welcome suggestion to implement 5 days week banking.

    1. Due to digital India initiative of Govt, People are becoming techno sevvy and very much comprehend to do online transaction. Five days banking will help to boost digital India initiative. No problem will be faced by the customer.

  2. Eventhough govt. implement 4 days weekl, most of the present employee will not work properly & the customer will suffer much. The employee will leave friday afternoon the bank. Nobody will take actions against them.

  3. Multiple Banking channels available for the people in digitally mode as ATM,INB,UPI,ADWM,CDK for solution of every banking problems another channel is CSP which helps customer from every nook and corner .hence it is the demand of time . justify the demand of bankers

  4. If the bank server is down, who will be accountable?? If cash service in Sbi, become off on 4pm, what if server down and with 5day banking

  5. First banking authority improve network
    And server problems facing by rural areas
    Bank customers.
    State government holidays are not applicable
    To banks.
    Central government 17 holiday’s only allowed .daily working hours 0930 to 1800 hours ..
    ATM and pass book printings machine not
    Working.

While this will certainly help the Bank Employees at large for a better family Life and their demand has been fulfilled by the Bank Management/the Government, it becomes the legal duty and moral responsibilities of the Bank Employees to Sincerely Work for the revised Working hours on the remaining working days and to give best of them,more particularly to the needy customers,who may not be able cope up with the Modern Digital Banking due to their limited knowledge and resources to access the latest gadgets required for Banking operations.
    This will be a great service to the Banking Customers, if the Bank Employees vow for the same.

  7. 5 day week is genuine demand of bankers.Govt should accept the demand for better productivity and service from bankers.

  8. Bankers also should have work life balance,5 days banking is very necessary for bankers,govt has to consider bankers demands and should respond positively because they are the backbone of Indian economy,
