First Bank Failure in US this year! Metropolitan Capital Bank Closed, Important News for Customers

On Friday, January 30, 2026, Metropolitan Capital Bank & Trust was closed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has been named as Receiver. First Independence Bank, Detroit, MI assumed all the deposit accounts and assets of Metropolitan Capital Bank & Trust. Metropolitan Capital Bank & Trust is the first bank to fail in the nation this year.

FDIC insurance covers up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category. This means that if banks in the US fail, then the FDIC provides $250,000 to each customer of that bank.

In 2025, two banks failed in US – The Santa Anna National Bank and Pulaski Savings Bank. The Santa Anna National Bank was closed on June 27, 2025 and was acquired by Coleman County State Bank. Pulaski Savings Bank was closed on January 17, 2025 and was acquired by Millennium Bank.

Metropolitan Capital Bank has been closed due to concerns over its financial stability. Metropolitan Capital opened in 2005 and grew clientele across 46 states and 10 countries.

Depositors of Metropolitan Capital Bank & Trust will automatically become depositors of First Independence Bank. As of September 30, 2025, Metropolitan Capital Bank & Trust reported total assets of $261.1 million and total deposits of $212.1 million. The FDIC preliminarily estimates that the failure will cost its Deposit Insurance Fund (DIF) about $19.7 million.
