Finance Ministry to review Performance of PSU Banks related to Unclaimed Deposits

The finance ministry is scheduled to review the progress made by public sector banks (PSBs) in settling unclaimed deposits. The meeting is expected to be held on January 14, according to sources.

The meeting, to be chaired by the Joint Secretary (banking) in the Department of Financial Services (DFS), will assess the status of unclaimed deposits transferred to the Depositor Education and Awareness (DEA) Fund and the pace of claims settlement across banks.

Senior executives from State Bank of India (SBI), Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and other nationalised banks are expected to participate in the review through video conferencing.

Unclaimed deposits with banks, including private lenders, stood at ₹67,003 crore as of June 30, 2025, Parliament was informed on Monday. According to data from the Reserve Bank of India, public sector banks accounted for ₹58,330.26 crore of the total, while private sector banks held ₹8,673.72 crore in unclaimed deposits.

In case of public sector banks, SBI is leading with unclaimed deposits of Rs 19,329.92 crore, followed by Punjab National Bank Rs 6,910.67 crore and Canara Bank Rs 6,278.14 crore. This information was provided by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. Among the private lenders, ICICI Bank has the highest unclaimed deposits of Rs 2,063.45 crore, followed by HDFC Bank Rs 1,609.56 crore and Axis Bank Rs 1,360.16 crore.

The Government has also launched a programme “Aapki Punji Aapka Adhikar” (Your Capital, Your Right) to help citizens claim their unclaimed financial assets like dormant bank deposits, insurance, shares, and pensions.
