Pakistan experienced another earthquake on Monday as a 4.7 magnitude tremor hit the country at a shallow depth of 10 km, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). This marks the third earthquake in three days, as Pakistan had already witnessed moderate 4.0 magnitude quakes on Saturday and Sunday. The latest earthquake occurred at 11:12 am (IST), with coordinates latitude 30.51 N and longitude 70.41 E, as reported by NCS on X (formerly Twitter).
Experts have warned that shallow earthquakes like Monday’s can cause stronger shaking and more damage, as the seismic waves reach the surface faster. Pakistan lies in a highly active seismic zone, with several major fault lines crossing through the country. Provinces such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan sit on the southern edge of the Eurasian plate, while Sindh and Punjab rest on the northwestern edge of the Indian plate. This tectonic boundary makes Pakistan particularly vulnerable to frequent and powerful earthquakes.
In the past, Pakistan has faced devastating earthquakes, including the 8.1 magnitude quake in Balochistan in 1945 that caused severe destruction.
