The Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers submitted a proposal to the Centre before the Union Budget 2024, with seven demands. These demands included the formation of the 8th Pay Commission, restoration of the OPS, release of the 18-month dearness allowance and relief frozen during the Covid-19 pandemic, and other requests. The demands were formulated during a meeting in New Delhi and were also made available on the union’s official website.
The specific demands made by the union were as follows:
- Restoration of the commuted portion of the pension after 12 years instead of the current 15.
- Elimination of the 5% cap on compassionate appointments, allowing the appointment of dependent family members of deceased or medically retired government employees before completing their tenure.
- Filling vacancies in government departments and prohibiting outsourcing.
- Recognition of pending associations and federations, and de-recognition of unions such as the Postal Group C union.
- Regularization of casual, contractual laborers, and Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) employees.
As various industry bodies have already met with the finance ministry to present their recommendations and demands prior to the budget presentation, it is evident that a thorough consultation process is underway. The Union Budget, to be presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on July 23, is eagerly anticipated.
