Government employees have said that if their promotions aren’t decided soon and the government doesn’t wake up, they will start a “non-cooperation movement”. They are unhappy because many employees are stuck in the same position for a long time and suffer financially when they retire without getting promoted.
“If the government doesn’t take action, we will start a non-cooperation movement. This means we will only work during regular hours, from 9 am to 5:30 pm, and won’t do any extra work like we usually do,” said one of the forum members.
On March 4, over a hundred officials from the Central Secretariat Service (CSS) marched peacefully to show their protest. They went to the Raisina Hills, where the Prime Minister’s office and important Ministries like home affairs and defense are located. They want the government to pay attention to their concerns. A committee called the Cadre Review Committee (CRC) was formed in 2022 to look into the issue, but its findings have not been given yet. The committee is led by officials from the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), which is responsible for the CSS.
The CSS Forum has tried to talk to the government about this issue, but they haven’t received a positive response. They feel disappointed and frustrated that the government is not taking care of CSS officers, who are an important part of the Central government. The government formed the CRC to understand the need for more employees in different Ministries and departments because the government is starting many new projects. The CRC was also supposed to suggest ways to help CSS officers progress in their careers. However, even though the committee has finished its discussions, the government has not done anything about it.
We know that at least 20 government departments have asked for more than 2,500 extra positions. If we consider all the departments, the number of positions needed will be much higher. Because the CRC’s report is delayed, these departments don’t have enough employees to do their work properly. CSS officers are also not getting promoted, causing them to feel upset and discouraged. The CSS forum has decided to do more protest marches in the next few days.
These employees are determined to make sure their concerns are heard and addressed. They want the government to recognize their hard work and help them move forward in their careers. The government needs to take action and show that it values its Central government employees.
