A Canara Bank ATM in Sector 40, Chandigarh, was hacked in October 2020. The hacker withdrew ₹1.55 lakh from the ATM. The bank management filed a complaint with the police, and the Sector 39 police station has registered a case against the unidentified hacker.
In the complaint, the Canara Bank manager said that the bank’s headquarters is in Bangalore. The bank also has a branch in Sector 40C. The manager said that there is an ATM booth in the branch office. CCTV footage from the bank showed that an unidentified person visited the ATM booth on October 3, 4, and 7, 2020.
The footage showed the suspect opening the ATM and tampering with it while withdrawing money. The suspect also used the internet to carry out the crime. According to bank officials, they found that the suspect had used the internet to hack the ATM and steal money by fraud. The suspect then used a fake debit card to withdraw ₹1.55 lakh from the ATM.
The Sector 39 police station has registered a case against the unidentified suspect under sections 420 (cheating), 120B (criminal conspiracy), and the IT Act. The police are investigating the case and trying to identify the suspect from the CCTV footage.
