Lokpal of India is under backfire – not for the cases but for purchasing BMW cars. Recently, Lokpal has released a tender to purchase 7 BMW cars. The estimated cost of these vehicles would be approximately Rs.5 crore. People are criticizing Lokpal for misusing public funds. Today’s, we will have a look at the budget of Lokpal – How much budget Lokpal has? Can Lokpal purchase these luxury cars?
The Lokpal’s total budget for 2025-26 is ₹44.32 crore, according to official documents. Interestingly, in 2023-24, the Lokpal had budgeted ₹12 lakh for “motor vehicles” but spent nothing, as the actual expenditure was zero. Before that, the Lokpal had not recorded any spending on motor vehicles.
Now, the Lokpal issued a tender on October 16 to buy seven BMW cars in this financial year. The cars are BMW 3 Series 330 Li (Sport model Long Wheelbase), each costing nearly ₹70 lakh on road.
What P Chidambaram said?
P Chidambaram said that : When Honourable judges of the Supreme Court are provided modest sedans, why do the Chairman and six members of the Lokpal require BMW cars?
Why spend public money to acquire these cars?
I hope that at least one or two members of the Lokpal have refused, or will refuse, to accept these cars
What Kiran Bedi said?
Kiran Bedi, former IPS officer and a supporter of the Jan Lokpal movement, criticized the purchase. Speaking to News18, she called it a “truly avoidable decision” and said the Lokpal “was not created for extravagance.” Bedi had protested alongside activist Anna Hazare in 2013 for the formation of the Lokpal.

Bedi said, “Respecting people’s sentiments, the Lokpal should buy swadeshi cars. When the Prime Minister promotes swadeshi, why is the Lokpal buying foreign cars? Don’t we have good Indian-made cars? This decision goes against the swadeshi mission of PM Modi.”
She also added that the Lokpal has not fulfilled its purpose. “People were looking up to the Lokpal for integrity, honesty, and diligence. It was not created for extravagance. I think the Lokpal has not delivered,” Bedi said. She suggested that the Lokpal should instead consider Swadeshi electric cars.
