According to sources cited by Reuters and CNBC-TV18, there has been a significant development regarding the state-run telecom operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL). The Union cabinet has given its approval for a revival package worth Rs 89,047 crore ($10.79 billion) to rejuvenate BSNL.
This move follows BSNL’s recent partnership agreement with Tata Consultancy Services, which aims to deploy and rollout a nationwide 4G network. BSNL’s decision to focus on 4G comes at a time when its competitors are actively working on introducing 5G services in the country.
BSNL has faced challenges due to inadequate infrastructure and tough competition from Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea. These rivals have successfully launched affordable 4G services for voice calls and data, making it even more difficult for BSNL to compete.
Previously, the Cabinet had approved a comprehensive four-year revival plan worth Rs 1.64 lakh crore for BSNL. While the plan spans four years, the majority of its implementation will take place during the initial two years. In July 2022, it was revealed by Ashwini Vaishnaw that the cash component of Rs 1.64 lakh crore would be allocated for spectrum allocation, capital expenditure, and viability gap funding.
