In a significant bank heist, burglars targeted the State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Thumukunta village under Hindupur division and made away with Rs 38 lakh in cash and 10 kilograms of gold, police officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The value of 10 kg gold is approximately ₹10,09,90,000 (i.e. 10 crore 9 lakh 90 thousand). This is a big robbery reported in recent months. The gold and jewellery of several customers of the bank, has been looted. Customers have gathered at the bank and are demanding their jewellery from the bank.
Earlier, a similar robbery occured in Indian Overseas Bank Chinhat Branch in Lucknow. 42 Lockers were broken and Jewellery Worth Crores was Stolen from Bank.

The burglary occurred in the early hours of Sunday around 2:00 am, but the incident only came to light on Monday morning when bank staff discovered it. The branch was found ransacked, and a substantial amount of cash and gold was missing from the premises.
According to KV Mahesh, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Hindupur, surveillance footage showed one individual inside the bank before the CCTV system was disabled. “We suspect that more people joined in after the initial entry. The burglars appear to have stayed inside the bank for nearly two hours,” he said.

Security Lapses Ignored Despite Warnings
What has raised serious concerns is the complete absence of basic security measures at the bank. According to police, no security guard had been posted at the branch for the past four years. In addition, the building had a large window fitted with weak, easily bendable grills, which the burglars likely used to enter the premises.

“This kind of security setup made the bank extremely vulnerable. It was practically an open invitation to burglars,” said Officer Mahesh. He also revealed that the local Inspector of Police had warned the SBI management about the poor security arrangements three months ago, but no action was taken by the bank to address the issue.

A case has been registered, and multiple police teams are now working on identifying and apprehending the culprits. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage, gathering forensic evidence, and questioning possible witnesses in and around the area.
Police officials emphasized that had the SBI bank taken the earlier warning seriously and implemented standard security measures—such as installing stronger grills, hiring a security guard, and reinforcing the surveillance system—this incident could likely have been prevented.
The investigation is going on and more details will be released soon.
