Punjab National Bank (PNB) has issued a strong internal advisory to all its branches and offices, warning against the use of harsh, humiliating, or demoralising language during reviews and daily interactions. PNB stated that employee dignity and respect are non-negotiable. PNB has always been a pioneer in the area of staff welfare. This new advisory by PNB shows its commitment to staff welfare.
PNB said: Don’t use harsh language in review meetings as it demoralises staff and also damages the reputation of Bank. A respectful work environment builds motivation, ownership, and accountability — while harsh language creates fear, resentment, and long-term damage to productivity.
PNB has received several continuous complaints from the field about inappropriate behaviour by some senior officials. The bank has instructed Zonal Office Executives, Circle Heads, and Circle Executives to ensure that this message is communicated and implemented across all levels without exception. All staff have been asked to avoid any form of communication that could be seen as humiliating, discouraging or intimidating.
PNB said that harsh communication may be recorded or shared externally, potentially harming the bank’s image. In today’s digital environment, such incidents could have “far-reaching consequences for a brand.”
Recently, a lot of videos and screenshots have gone viral on social media in which senior management officers can be seen shouting at junior officers. This is totally not expected in a public sector organisation.
