Pratik Majalkar, along with his parents Janardhan and Urmila Majalkar, is facing charges for supposedly causing the suicide of Purva Majalkar, a 36-year-old bank worker. The police say Purva was mistreated in her marriage, with her in-laws demanding money for a flat and land and making hurtful comments about her being adopted.
Purva tragically took her own life at her home in Bhoiwada, Dadar East on December 9. Her mother, Usha Mahadik, a retired BMC employee, and her father, Vilas Mahadik, formerly with the Central Bank of India, shared this information with the police.
Adopted in 1990, Purva worked as a deputy manager in a private bank after graduating. In 2021, she married Pratik despite his family’s initial objections, which included asking for gold and valuables.
The mistreatment continued, with Purva giving ₹10,000 every month to her in-laws. They demanded more money, claiming it was for household expenses and buying land. They also insulted her about being adopted and said her parents didn’t provide a dowry. Even though Purva talked to her parents about it, they decided not to give in to further demands.
Later, Pratik started asking for money from Purva’s parents, saying he got a MHADA flat in a lottery. Purva’s parents gave two cheques of ₹2.5 lakh each to settle the matter, but Purva kept facing trouble.
Sadly, on December 9, when she wanted to visit her father recovering from cataract surgery, Purva ended her life. A case has been registered based on her mother’s complaint under sections 306 (abetment of suicide), 34 (common intention), and 498 (husband or relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code.
