In a shocking incident, bank officers from the Bank of Baroda’s Regional Office (RO) in Amritsar were brutally attacked while on a recovery assignment in Pathankot. The officers, who were carrying out their duties, were assaulted by unidentified miscreants. One officer was reportedly stabbed with a knife and sustained severe injuries.
On February 4, 2025, a team led by Mr. Ashok Kumar, Branch Manager of Pathankot Main Branch, visited the residence of a borrower, Mr. Harwinder Singh, to discuss a recovery case. The borrower was unavailable, and the team interacted with his father, leading to an escalation of verbal hostility. Sensing potential danger, the team decided to leave the premises. However, they were ambushed and attacked while returning to their branch.
The attackers, reportedly armed with metal rods and iron bars, inflicted severe injuries on Mr. Kanav Sharma, who sustained deep cuts on his hand, face, and jaw. He was immediately taken to the Government Civil Hospital, Pathankot, for medical attention. Other team members narrowly escaped physical harm but reported the theft of personal belongings, including a gold chain and wallet.
The All India Bank of Baroda Officers’ Association (AIBOBOA) has expressed deep concern over the incident. In a letter addressed to the Zonal Head of Bank of Baroda in Ludhiana, the association highlighted that despite the severity of the attack, no First Information Report (FIR) has been filed by the local police authorities as of now.
The association has urged the bank management to intervene urgently and take up the matter with the Police Commissioner of Pathankot or the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Punjab. The incident has caused significant distress and frustration among the bank officers’ community.
The AIBOBOA has appreciated the swift response from the management at the RO Amritsar but emphasized the need for immediate action to ensure the safety and security of bank officers in the region. The association has called for a thorough investigation into the attack and strict action against the perpetrators.
This incident has raised concerns about the safety of bank employees, especially those involved in recovery operations. The AIBOBOA has vowed to continue advocating for the protection and rights of bank officers across the country.
