A 27-year-old man was arrested for breaking into a bank in Pataudi, Gurugram to steal CCTV footage that showed him taking ₹14.82 lakh from the vault over several weeks. The suspect, Aman Kumar from Rewari, worked as a cashier at a cooperative bank’s Rathiwas branch in Pataudi. He joined in May this year and was arrested on Monday by the crime branch.
On Monday morning, bank officials found the main entrance lock broken and alerted the authorities. An audit revealed that ₹14.82 lakh from the vault was missing. Investigators said that although the main door was broken, there was no damage to the vault itself.
Officials said – “Kumar was secretly taking cash from the vault over the past few weeks. On Friday, he took about ₹6 lakh. Fearing he might get caught, he came to the branch at midnight on Saturday with an accomplice. They broke the main door lock and stole the CCTV DVR before fleeing.”
Police initially suspected a duplicate key was used. “Since the DVR containing all CCTV footage was also stolen, we suspected an insider was involved,” police officer said. Sandeep Turan, Gurugram police public relations officer, said the locker keys were held only by the bank manager and the cashier.
Footage from nearby private CCTV cameras showed two suspects, including Kumar, breaking in. After questioning, Kumar admitted his involvement and said he stole the DVR to avoid getting caught.
He was sent to police remand for interrogation after being produced in court on Tuesday. ₹6 lakh was recovered from his house. Police are trying to recover the remaining money, the DVR, and arrest the second suspect. A theft case was registered at Bilaspur police station on Monday based on the bank manager’s complaint.
