The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed four monetary penalties on Punjab National Bank (PNB) for non-compliance with operational guidelines relating to currency chests.
The penalties were imposed on September 9 and September 11, 2026. The total penalty amount is ₹8,59,750.
The RBI imposed a penalty of ₹2,91,750 on September 9, 2026. Three additional penalties of ₹1,33,800, ₹1,34,600 and ₹2,99,600 were imposed on September 11, 2026. The action was taken due to non-compliance with the RBI’s operational guidelines for currency chests under its Master Directions. The bank stated that the financial impact of the action would be limited to the total penalty amount.
The penalty amounts were directly debited from its account maintained with the RBI. The deductions were identified during periodic reconciliation of the bank’s accounts.
