Jewellery Missing from State Bank of India Locker in Meerut

A case of missing jewelry from a locker at the State Bank of India (SBI) in Meerut has recently come to light. The jewelry, worth Rs 20 lakh, was reported missing from the locker of a retired bank manager. The retired bank manager stated that the missing items included gold and silver jewelry, as well as a diamond ring belonging to his daughter.

The victim has filed a complaint with the police, alleging theft of the jewelry. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter. However, this incident has raised concerns about the security of bank lockers.

According to the retired bank manager, Samimuddin Khan, he had been using the locker at the SBI Bank in Palhaida since 2006. He had stored gold and silver jewelry, as well as a diamond ring belonging to his daughter, in the locker. When he went to open the locker on Tuesday, he discovered that all the jewelry, worth approximately Rs 20 lakh, was missing.

Samimuddin Khan, who is 73 years old and has limited eyesight due to his age, used to take a bank employee with him whenever he visited the locker to store his belongings. On the day of the incident, his daughter, Dr. Neelima, needed jewelry for a wedding, so he accompanied her to the bank. Upon reaching the locker room, they found the locker open and all the jewelry missing.

The victim immediately informed the bank manager, Rashmi, but did not receive any assistance from the bank. He then reported the incident to the police, who arrived at the scene and began questioning the bank employees.

The bank manager, Rashmi, stated that the locker had been last opened on February 1, 2022. She emphasized that the bank is not at fault in this incident, as the locker can only be accessed with the keys of the account holder and the bank. After a customer leaves the locker room, a bank employee enters to ensure that nothing has been left behind or that the locker has been left open.

The police have deemed the case suspicious and are investigating further. The victim, Samimuddin Khan, has provided a detailed account of the incident, stating that the locker seemed to be already open when he arrived with his daughter. He also mentioned the uncooperative attitude of the bank officers and their attempts to blame him for the missing jewelry.

In recent years, there have been several cases of missing jewelry from bank lockers across different cities in India. These incidents have raised concerns about the security arrangements of bank lockers and the responsibility of the banks in ensuring the safety of customers’ valuables. It is important for individuals to exercise caution and take necessary precautions when using bank lockers to store their valuable items.

  1. In SBI many branches locker keys are handled by class-4 temporary/Contract employees instead of an permanent officer.
