Did You Know? Now 99.9% of Indian Villages are covered with Banking System. The Government of India aims to provide banking facilities to all the citizens of India.
The government has said that almost every inhabited village in India now has access to a banking outlet within a distance of 5 kilometres. These outlets include bank branches, Business Correspondents (BCs), and India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) facilities.
According to data from the Jan Dhan Darshak (JDD) App, which tracks banking coverage through a Geographic Information System (GIS), 6,00,803 out of 6,01,328 villages (99.91%) in the country are already covered.
The government also highlighted full coverage in states like Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Out of 27,524 villages in Karnataka, 27,516 (99.97%) have banking access, while in Andhra Pradesh, 16,520 out of 16,559 villages (99.76%) are covered.

Officials added that efforts are ongoing to bring the remaining uncovered villages under the banking network as well, and progress is reviewed regularly.
The Government of India had also launched the scheme of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) with this aim. People can open free savings account in any bank across India. The scheme has been highly successful and crores of people have opened their bank accounts. Earlier, people who used to stay away from banking, are now keeping their funds in Banks. Now People, even in the remotest places, are opening their bank accounts.
A total of 55.98 crore accounts with a deposit balance of Rs. 2,61,982 crores have been opened as on 25.07.2025 under PMJDY. Out of the above, 31.24 crore (55.8%) Jan-Dhan accounts belong to women. A total of 35,99,662 PMJDY account holders have availed the Overdraft (OD) facility, with an outstanding amount of ₹393.02 crore, as of March 2025.
