The formation of the Narendra Modi 3.0 government has brought with it a wave of anticipation, particularly surrounding the establishment of the 8th Pay Commission. On Sunday, 30 Cabinet Ministers were sworn in, signifying the beginning of a new era. While numerous media reports suggest that discussions regarding the 8th pay commission can now commence, there has been no official confirmation thus far. However, it is widely anticipated that the Modi government will make a significant announcement for central employees within the coming year.

This commission will be responsible for submitting recommendations to the central government regarding salary increases for government staff. If these recommendations are implemented, they will benefit over a crore government employees and pensioners. Historically, the central government has implemented the recommendations of a new pay commission every decade. The 7th Pay Commission, for instance, was put into effect in January 2016. As a result, it is likely that the 8th Pay Commission in India will be implemented from January 2026.

According to sources, the formation of the 8th Pay Commission should take place in 2025. Experts believe that if this occurs, there is a possibility of a substantial jump in the salary of central government employees. The 8th Pay Commission may introduce various changes, including adjustments to the fitment factor.

Under the proposed changes, the fitment factor for employees will increase to 3.68 times. Given the current minimum basic salary of government employees at Rs 18,000, this increase in the fitment factor will result in a rise in their basic pay by Rs 8,000, bringing it to Rs 26,000.
