11 Mumbai Police Officers Suspended for Unauthorized Absence from duty at RBI Office

In a significant breach of protocol, eleven police personnel from Mumbai, who were assigned to guard two Reserve Bank of India (RBI) buildings in Fort, were suspended for failing to report for duty without prior notice. Along with them, their company karkun (a police official responsible for managing duties) was also suspended for attempting to cover up the incident.

The Incident

The incident came to light when the officers did not show up for their guard duty at the old and new RBI buildings. The Reserve Bank of India alerted the Mumbai Police about the absence of personnel when they noticed that several policemen assigned for security were missing. After an internal investigation, it was revealed that 11 constables had left for their hometowns without informing the authorities or submitting leave applications.

Suspension and Investigation

On Tuesday, a suspension order was issued against the 11 policemen and their company karkun, Constable Mahendra Sangle, who was responsible for coordinating their duties. Sangle, who was on leave during the period, had reportedly been informed about the absence but did not disclose it to his superiors. His assistant, Kamlesh More, was tasked with managing the duty roster during his absence.

The suspension order was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Local Arms II) Sandeep Jadhav, though he refrained from sharing further details with the media.

What Went Wrong?

According to police officials, the Local Arms II department was responsible for assigning security personnel to guard the RBI buildings. A total of 48 constables were allocated to the old RBI building, and 32 were assigned to the new building.

When the 11 officers failed to report for duty on Monday, it was discovered that they had left for their hometowns without submitting written leave applications. Although they claimed to have informed Sangle, no formal documentation was filed, violating police regulations.

Violations of Duty

As per standard procedures, all police personnel must submit written leave applications and obtain approval before leaving their assigned posts, especially when leaving the city limits. None of the 11 constables had done so. The inquiry found that Sangle, the company karkun, had deliberately concealed their absence, which was a serious lapse in his responsibilities.

Disciplinary Action

As a result, all 12 personnel involved in the incident, including the karkun, were suspended. A departmental inquiry has been ordered under Rule 3 of the Mumbai Police (Punishment and Appeals) Rules, 1956, to investigate the matter further.

In addition to their suspension, the officers have been instructed not to engage in any private employment or business during this period. They are also required to report daily to the senior police inspector (admin) and participate in weekly physical training sessions every Friday.

Conclusion

This incident highlights a serious breach of discipline within the Mumbai Police force, especially when it involves critical security duties at institutions like the Reserve Bank of India. The swift action taken against the personnel involved reflects the importance of maintaining strict protocols in ensuring the safety and security of vital establishments.
