A recent set of figures shared by AIPNBOF GS – Shri Krishna Kumar on social media, has revealed that a large number of officers are currently posted in Head Office (HO) divisions and Inspection & Audit departments across the country.
According to the data as on 31 December 2025, a total of 3,659 officers are working in different Head Office buildings. The highest number of officers in HO are in Scale 3 (1,139) and Scale 2 (1,103) positions. Other officers include 582 in Scale 1, 544 in Scale 4, 173 in Scale 5, 56 in Scale 6, 45 in Scale 7, and 17 in Scale 8.
In addition, the Inspection and Audit departments across the country have 1,847 officers. Among them, 1,276 officers are in Scale 3 and 473 officers are in Scale 4, while smaller numbers are posted in other scales.
When combined, the total number of officers in HO divisions and Inspection & Audit Department (IAD) reaches 5,506 officers. This number accounts for more than 10% of the total officer strength of the bank.
The data also indicates that over 20% of the bank’s Scale 3 officers and more than 26% of Scale 4 officers are posted in these departments.
AIPNBOF GS has suggested that the bank’s policy makers should review the current staffing structure and examine whether such a large number of officers are required in these offices.
This is the number of officers in HO and IAD. Apart from this, around 15-20% of officers in each circle are posted in Circle Office.
This leads to less staff being posted in branches which generate the actual business. Some critics say that in the era of Artificial Intelligence, the number of staff in back offices should decrease and banks should post more staff in branches.
